A sharps container is basically a heavy-duty plastic respectable used to deposit medical waste of the sharps variety.

These containers are one of the most important items when it comes to safe bio-hazardous waste disposal and medical waste management Pompano Beach as a whole. They are made from a sturdy material that is able to withstand medical instruments with sharp edges or points and keep the person handling medical waste safe from being infected with a blood-borne disease these wastes might be carrying.

A sharps container, in addition to being resistant to puncture, also shouldn’t easily bend or break and, it needs to be leak-proof and resistant to fire. They come in two color varieties – orange for chemotherapy waste and red for other medical waste and usually have handles on the side for easier manipulation.

If you are using a sharps container (and if you have any kind of medical waste management Pompano Beach program at your health care company, you should), the dilemma that I am sure you are often facing is where to put it?

First of all, there is nothing inherently wrong in placing these containers on any flat surface, like a desk, nearby shelf or even the floor, as long as you are using it for bio-hazardous waste disposal. However, the author of this article firmly believes that the best course is to take mount them somewhere.

Take a look at the rest of this article to find out how to mount a sharps container.

Necessary Items

You’re going to need a couple of things in order to mount a sharps container, so make sure that you have all of these before you start:

  • Sharps container (duh!)
  • Sharps container bracket
  • A bunch of screws
  • A 2D animation device also known as “pencil”
  • Safety goggles
  • A drill driver
  • A bucket of ice (actually, that’s for a certain bet, so scratch that)

Instructions

Okay, let’s get on with the actual instructions. Hopefully you procured the items you see above (except for the bucket of ice) and are raring to mount your sharps container.

Start by placing the sharps container bracket against the wall. Any of the four walls you see around you will do. Sharps container brackets can be different in style and/or size, but they are always attached to the wall with universal fasteners. P

Place the bracket against the wall, making sure that it is level and at the height that will be the most convenient for you. Basically, you don’t want it to be to low so you have to do squats every time you want to put something in it, nor do you want it to be too high and you need a ladder to reach it. The best position for this bio-hazardous waste disposal item, in my opinion, is just below your torso. You want to be able to see inside the container with ease.

Once you’ve found the perfect position for your sharps bracket, mark the spots with your pencil. This is where the screw holes are going to be. Put the bracket aside somewhere for a moment where it won’t get in the way, roll up your sleeves and start drilling some holes with a drill driver. Don’t forget to put the safety goggles.

You might notice that the holes you are making are smaller than the actual screws you will be using, but you will easily guide them in with a drill driver.

Now place the sharps container bracket against the wall so that the pilot holes are exactly under the screw holes. Put the screws into the pilot holes and screw them tightly.

Once the bracket is in place and doesn’t look like it will fall down if you place something on it, put the sharps container on it in a very ceremonial manner and call the rest of your health care staff to witness this important Pompano Beach medical waste management moment with you.
