Boca Raton Bio-medical waste management really consists of several rules, guidelines and best practices, including those for storing, containing and disposing of medical waste. For someone dealing with medical waste, these rules are not only necessary to follow, but are also beneficial.
• Bio-medical waste storage rules
All medical waste should be stored, separated from regular waste and classified in the health care facility where they are generated
Make sure that you store bio-medical wastes in an area where it will be well protected from natural elements like cold or heat and where it would be secure from scavenging animals, birds, rodents and insects. Also, keep this a “no unauthorized personnel” area.
• Bio-medical waste containment rules
All containers holding bio-medical wastes should be visibly labeled with the universal symbol for biohazards, as well as the words “Biomedical waste” or something similar.
Bio-medical waste are all disposed of in leak-prof red plastic bags. These should be able to withstand normal use and not reap, tear, or otherwise bust.
Sharps, however, should not be placed directly in red biohazard plastic bags, as they can puncture or tear open them and cause the contents, especially liquids, to pour out. So, instead of placing loose needles and other sharps inside red plastic bags, make sure to put them in a durable, hard plastic container. These containers are called “sharps containers” and need to be resistant to puncture, leak-proof and have a lid that allows them to close securely. When closing sharps containers you should also use a packaging tape for added security. Also, make sure that each sharps container is labeled properly with the biohazard sign and the words “Biomedical waste” or similar.
When carrying transporting bio-medical wastes in either sharps containers or plastic bags, it is always a good idea to put them into another larger receptacle to further protect from leakage.
• Bio-medical waste disposal rules:
Do not place bio-medical waste with regular trash or compact it with it before you decontaminate it properly.
Do not use trash chutes to transfer bio-medical waste.
Deliver all bio-medical wastes to a medical waste management operator no less than two weeks (14 days) starting from the day they were generated. The only exception to this rule are sharps.
Dispose of or transport sharps waste to a Boca Raton bio-medical waste disposal plant within three months (90 days) from the date the sharps container is sealed.
