One of the demands of medical waste management in Miami Beach is disposing bio-hazardous waste in specific ways. This is done because such wastes can be potentially contaminated with infectious organisms. As such, potentially bio-hazardous or infectious waste materials are often defined as regulated medical waste and include the following:

• Biologically cultured stocks, human blood and tissues
• Sharps (needles, glass material, syringes, blades, scalpels, etc)

Proper bio-hazardous waste disposal requires the following from laboratory personnel:

1. Sterilizing/disinfecting medical waste that was in any way or form in contact with bacterial, viral and other agents that can be infectious to people. This is done usually with the help of an autoclave or by treating medical waste with a 1:10 solution of bleach.
2. The next step in bio-hazardous waste disposal is placing all such waste (but not sharps) in special bags (these should be red, of course)
3. Sharps should be deposited into appropriate containers. The containers should be both leak and puncture proof. Once these containers are filled, they are further placed into medical waste boxes.
4. Once a medical waste box is full, it has to be sealed and the personnel responsible for bio-hazardous waste disposal notified to pick it up.

Labeling and Bio-Hazardous Waste Disposal

Correct labeling of medical waste is another important factor in bio-hazardous waste disposal in Miami Beach. It requires from all health care personnel to apply an adhesive-backed label with complete information to each container or bag that they place into a medical waste box. These labels include a date, facility, lab and contact person.

Other types of medical waste generated by hospitals and other health care facilities, not contaminated with biological materials are not treated as bio-hazardous and can, as such, be disposed of in regular trash containers or in landfills.
